After a devastating car accident, Nick whispers his last words to his wife, Mackenzie “As soon as they know I’m dead, they’ll come after you.”

Frightened and bewildered, Mackenzie travels to Philadelphia for the reading of her late husband’s will. To her shock, she learns that Nick’s mother, Cora, is not dead as he always claimed—rather, she is living as a recluse in the family’s gloomy nineteenth-century mansion. Desperate to understand why her husband lied to her for so many years, Mackenzie accepts Cora’s invitation to stay as her guest.

As the women come together in the same house, their stories entwine, each driven by an agenda. Cora clings to her memories and will do anything to protect her family’s secrets, while Mackenzie struggles to uncover a terrible truth long denied. But as she brings to light the darkness in her husband’s past, is Mackenzie putting her own future at risk?

This book has a very Edgar Allan Poe-esque feel to it, especially with the setting. It takes its time, building and building on the characters and plot, little by little. However, I didn't find it to be slow at all, mostly because Green reveals a little more to us with each chapter. The first 3/4 of the book you're getting little pieces of a huge puzzle--the mystery of the book. Then in the last 1/4 of the book you're seeing how these puzzle pieces fit together, one by one by one with each chapter. This book had me totally hooked. It was one of those books I simply couldn't stop reading. I just love that! It was an extremely well-thought-out story with a great, meaty, elaborate plot. I liked the way that the author didn't just dump the big reveal on us in one chapter--it kept me turning pages at a furious rate. I found the setting to be like a character in the book itself which is pretty cool and a hard thing to pull off. I always love when a book has a nebulous, underlying, creeping sense of menace throughout and that is definitely here and masterfully done. I thought the ending was extremely satisfying. Excellent writing, wonderful characters, awesome mystery. I'd definitely read more by this author.

The Book of James edition by Ellen J Green Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

It takes a lot for me read a book in one day, but I could not put this page-turner down. I cannot imagine being able to write this, keeping all the characters straight, the action moving, the sordid descriptions flowing, and pulling it all together in one phenomenal ending. A great, great read!!!
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It kept me interested throughout and I did not expect the ending. After reading about halfway, I thought I had it figured out as to how the story was going to end. This was not the case. I applaud the author for the complex twists that made the story unpredictable. I took one star off for several misspelled words and incorrect grammar. Also some of the sexual innuendos were not only unnecessary to advance the romance/intimacy storyline but seemed to be just "thrown" in and didn't fit. All in all though, it was an good read and I look forward to reading more by this author.
This story was well written and well paced. Was I totally surprised by the twists in the story? No. But the author layered the secrets in between the lines of each page so that I felt like I was Mackenzie, in her "Nancy Drew mode," devining the mysteries of her husband's and his family's pasts. I just came to a conclusion faster than she. But this did not diminish my enjoyment of this tale.

The characters were well developed, and for the most part the "good guys" were likable (Mackenzie, Sam, Dylan, and the oh, so lovable Ginny). But I did have difficulty with how quickly Mackenzie got over the loss of her husband. She finds out right away that he lied about his mother being dead, but until more secrets are divulged well in to the book, I would think there would be sadness mixed in with the confusion and anger. Instead, she quickly becomes attached and flirtatious with another man, without having any moments of grief, remembrance (for the good times), hesitancy. This bothered me.

In truth, my favorite character was probably the Monroe House. The nuances of atmosphere woven throughout the story brought the ancient mansion alive. It was this added layer of mystery and history that added an element of a ghost/haunted story line. I could feel the cobwebs brush my face, the damp stone walls press against my skin and the voices of many (many) ghosts whisper in my ear.

In the end, all the loose ends were woven together so the reader is left with a satisfying conclusion to the storylines, and lifetimes, of its many characters.
Her husband dies in a car wreck in the first few pages. The grieving wife responds to a lawyer regarding a Will and money she had not known existed. The book is well written, the characters detailed and developed as the wife finds she did not know her husband at all. Kept me up wanting to read the ending, will certainly keep you involved. Do be aware there are difficult subjects dealt with, very few light moments, no humor. A good mystery, all on the dark side.
I enjoyed this mystery. I liked the pace that the author set for "fact finding". Of course some of the actions by the youngest main character are a bit unbelievable but done to move the story forward. I doubt that any real person with a sense of self preservation would have remained or returned to that house willingly, but mysteries and horror are usually based on aberrant behaviors and responses. I had suspicions but never guessed the truth of the mystery until it was revealed. I read for enjoyment. I don't tear apart a novel unless there are real grammar errors that disrupt the flow of the story or if the writing is adolescent. This had neither of those flaws. I would read more by this author.
Started hunkering down into this book around 8 pm one night, and ended up staying up til 4 a.m. to finish. Lots of plot twists and great character development. I don't write many book reviews (even though I rely entirely on them to make decisions) but felt compelled to write one for this book; that should speak for itself. A great mystery, with a fun/interesting story line which kept me guessing right to the end. I honestly expected a slightly different outcome, but was pleased with the ending. I loved it.
What a wonderful mystery! This story keeps the suspense high and engaging from the first to last page. Imagine that your husband dies in a car crash. His last words to you reveal he has a living family you never knew about and his dying words tell you to go there find someone and trust no one. Our heroine makes the story real and as well as likable. You find your self biting your nails and cheering her on as each page turns. You find that some people are capable of great evil even if their stories were filled with sorrow. The supporting characters are well developed keeping you solidly engaged. This is a well crafted story from beginning to end that leaves you ready to read more from Ellen Green.
